Harbor Country Michigan Guide to Towns & Experiences

Harbor Country Guide

Harbor Country is a stretch of small Lake Michigan shoreline towns in southwest Michigan. It includes New Buffalo, Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert, Sawyer, and Three Oaks. Bridgman and Michigan City sit just outside the core area but are often part of the same weekend loop because of how close everything is.

The towns sit only minutes apart, but each one feels slightly different. You move between them easily and end up back near the lake again without much effort.

Where to Eat

In New Buffalo, Postboy has become one of the most talked-about restaurants in the area. Chef and owner James Galbraith was named a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region.

The menu changes with the seasons and follows local farms closely. Dishes shift regularly based on what is available nearby, combining regional ingredients with broader influences. The space is open and bright, with a patio that stays active through the summer and naturally extends dinners later into the evening.

Just across the state line in the Duneland Beach area of Michigan City, Farina’s Supper Club focuses on classic Italian American comfort food. The dining room is dim, traditional, and built around familiar dishes like pasta, steak, and seafood served in large portions meant for sharing.

The Pork Chop Sinatra is the signature dish. It is butterflied, breaded, and large enough for two people. Frank Sinatra plays continuously in the background, which gives the space a steady rhythm through the night.

In Sawyer, Susan’s Sawyer is centered around a seasonal menu and a summer patio that fills quickly in warm weather. A few minutes away, The Historian Sawyer rotates its menu frequently and pairs it with a strong cocktail program that builds energy as the evening goes on.

For daytime meals, Oak Street Eatery is known for breakfast tacos and a house-made salsa with noticeable heat. Viola’s Café serves Southern-inspired comfort food shaped by the owner’s background and culinary training tied to The Chopping Block Chicago.

Rio’s Mexican Grill and Red Arrow Roadhouse are consistent casual stops with broad menus and easy service.

Wineries & Tastings

Wine tasting is a core part of the broader Southwest Michigan region and sits within a short driving loop from Harbor Country.

Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant in Buchanan is one of the most established wineries in the area, with vineyard views and a full restaurant.

Round Barn Winery, Distillery & Brewery in Baroda combines wine, beer, and spirits in one place and often includes live music.

Hickory Creek Winery in Buchanan is smaller and quieter, with a straightforward tasting room and approachable wines.

Dablon Vineyards & Winery in Baroda focuses on estate-grown wines in a modern tasting room setting.

Many visitors move between these as part of a loop. Harbor Country Adventures offers guided winery tours that handle transportation between stops so the route does not need to be planned individually.

Get Outside

Warren Dunes State Park is the most recognizable outdoor destination in the area. The dune climb is steep and sandy, and the view from the top opens across Lake Michigan. The beach below stretches long enough that short visits often become full days.

Indiana Dunes National Park adds a wider mix of landscapes including wetlands, forest trails, and shoreline. It is also one of the strongest migratory bird corridors in the Midwest during spring and fall.

The Galien River moves slowly through marshland near New Buffalo. It is a quiet place for kayaking and wildlife viewing.

Trails managed by Chikaming Open Lands are spread throughout the region and are typically flat, shaded, and easy to access.

Pickleball, tennis, and skating are active near New Buffalo High School during warmer months.

With Kids

Captain Mike’s Fun Park in Bridgman includes mini golf, go-karts, and water bumper boats.

The splash pad at the New Buffalo Township Playground is a common stop in summer months.

Red Arrow Stables offers horseback riding through wooded trails along with lessons.

Red Arrow Rides provides beach rentals including paddleboards, chairs, and licensed golf carts, delivered directly to lodging.

Farmers Markets & Local Food

In Union Pier, Skip’s European Farmers Market runs seasonally as an open-air market. It is one of the more active weekly stops, with produce, baked goods, prepared foods, and vendors that rotate through the summer and early fall.

In New Buffalo, the farmers market sits closer to town and follows the growing season closely. Vendors shift week to week depending on what local farms are harvesting.

A few of the most important food stops in the area sit just outside the market structure entirely. That is where direct connections to local farming show up outside the weekly market format.

Mick Klug Farmstand in New Buffalo is the retail extension of Mick Klug Farms, which is based in St. Joseph. The farm is one of the larger produce operations in Southwest Michigan, supplying restaurants and markets across the region. The New Buffalo farmstand brings that harvest directly into town. What is available changes constantly with the season, from sweet corn and tomatoes in peak summer to peaches, greens, melons, and flowers as the year shifts.

In Three Oaks, Granor Farm is a certified organic working farm. Everything happens on-site, from growing to harvesting to selling. The farm store reflects whatever is coming out of the fields at that moment, and the experience of visiting it is tied directly to seeing the land where the food is produced. Granor also supplies restaurants and operates a CSA program, but the farm itself remains the center.

In New Buffalo, Farmette was founded by Katie Burdett, who came out of sustainable agriculture and farm systems work in Chicago and Southwest Michigan. It operates as a working farm, bakery, café, and market in one space. Produce is grown on-site, bread and pastries are baked daily, and the counter shifts with the season. Vegetables, prepared foods, coffee, flowers, pantry items, and wine all come from the same cycle of growing and production. It functions as both a place to shop and a place to sit and eat, built around that connection between farm and table.

In nearby Michigan City, larger regional farmers markets expand the selection with more vendors and broader offerings.

Across all of these stops, availability changes constantly with the season and local harvest cycles.

Shopping

AP Shop in Lakeside focuses on high-end designer fashion alongside curated vintage pieces.

In Three Oaks, Goods & Heroes carries clothing for men, women, and children with inventory that changes frequently. Inside the same space, there is also a curated selection of high-end fiber and yarn sourced globally for textile work.

Final Thought

Harbor Country is shaped by Lake Michigan. The towns, restaurants, farms, and markets sit around it, but the lake is the constant presence.

Most days still end up near the water, whether that is a beach, a dune, or a quiet shoreline stop between towns. The rest of the area moves around that rhythm.
