Downtown Valparaiso After Oktoberfest: Where Fall Weekends Go Now

Downtown Valparaiso's busiest stretch ended on October 4, when Alpen Haus & The Golf Lodge closed out a month-long Oktoberfest that had overlapped with Popcorn Fest. The two businesses that arrived downtown this summer have each posted their regular hours for the cold months. Every major downtown date left on the 2026 Valparaiso Events calendar lands on a day when both are open.

This is the first fall with both of them in place. Alpen Haus held its grand opening in July 2026. Pat's Ice Cream Parlor reopened that same month under new owners. Downtown Valpo has also been the kind of place where a weekend gets organized around the next big event on the Plaza. From here to December, the businesses' posted hours do more of that work than the event listings do.

Five weeks of steins, then the regular menu

Alpen Haus ran its Oktoberfest from September 5 through October 4. The schedule included brass band and DJ nights, dirndl-and-lederhosen contests, stein-hoisting, a Popcorn Fest tie-in on Saturday, September 12, and a Revolution Brewing keg tapping on Sunday, September 20. The festival beer list leaned on the big Munich names: Hofbräu, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr, plus Weihenstephaner, alongside helles, pilsner, Kölsch and wheat beers.

With the steins put away, the building is easier to see for what it is year-round. It is a German restaurant and a golf simulator bar on Washington Street, in a space of about 6,000 square feet. Before it opened, co-owner Alec Emmons told The Times of Northwest Indiana that the owners had just returned from a trip to Germany where they picked up many ideas. "We've renovated every inch of it," he told the paper. "People will be shocked when they walk in."

The regular menu carries the dishes that justify a cold-weather visit. It lists Schweinshaxe pork knuckle, pork or chicken schnitzel, rouladen, currywurst, a wurstplatte and gulasch. The bierhalle advertises more than 15 drafts. The hours matter as much as the menu for planning a fall weekend:

  • Monday: closed
  • Tuesday through Friday: 4 to 10 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday is the long day: twelve hours, starting at 11 a.m. Every Saturday event left on the downtown calendar falls inside that window.

The ice cream parlor that stayed open

Pat's Ice Cream Parlor at 222 Lincolnway is the other half of the story. The Times of Northwest Indiana reported in July that Samantha Hunt and Aaron Mace had taken over the parlor from longtime owner Patricia "Pat" Berning, bringing it back to Lincolnway.

In September, the new owners answered the question every downtown ice cream shop faces once school starts. Their September 21 social post read:

"We're OPEN YEAR-ROUND at Pat's Parlor! Starting October 1, our fall & winter hours will be Thursday–Sunday, 2–9PM, and we'll be closed Monday–Wednesday."

Three days later the case got a fall flavor. Caramel Apple Pie is spicy cinnamon ice cream with real apple pieces, crispy cinnamon shortbread and a thick caramel ripple.

Thursday through Sunday, 2 to 9 p.m., is a narrow window, and it is narrow in the right place. It covers late afternoons and evenings on the four days when downtown has something on. It also overlaps Alpen Haus's hours every one of those days. From Thursday through Sunday, a scoop on Lincolnway and dinner on Washington Street can share the same outing.

Every date left on the calendar fits both schedules

Here is the claim in full. Every major downtown date on the Valparaiso Events calendar for the rest of 2026 falls on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, or on the performance dates of a stage show. All of those days sit inside both businesses' posted hours.

Date Event Where and when Pat's posted hours that day Alpen Haus posted hours that day
Sat., Oct. 17 Autumn Promenade Downtown, 12 to 4:30 p.m. 2 to 9 p.m. 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sat., Oct. 17 Brewski Fest Central Park Plaza, 5 to 10 p.m. 2 to 9 p.m. 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Fri., Oct. 23 Downtown Trick-or-Treat Downtown, 4 to 6 p.m. 2 to 9 p.m. 4 to 10 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 7 USO Show with the Calumet Ridge Jazz Ensemble Memorial Opera House 2 to 9 p.m. 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Fri., Nov. 20 Pink Friday Downtown, hours vary by business 2 to 9 p.m. 4 to 10 p.m.
Nov. 27 to Dec. 13 The Secret Garden Memorial Opera House, selected dates Open Thu. to Sun. Open Tue. to Sun.
Thu., Dec. 3 Classical Blast: Dark Side of the Yule Chicago Street Theatre, 7 to 9 p.m. 2 to 9 p.m. 4 to 10 p.m.
Sat., Dec. 5 Holly Days Downtown, 3 to 6 p.m. 2 to 9 p.m. 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The hours in the table are each business's regular posted schedule. Neither has published holiday hours, so Thanksgiving weekend and the Secret Garden run are worth checking directly.

October 17 is the one double-header

This Saturday has two events in two shifts. The Autumn Promenade is in its second year. It runs in the same format as the Chocolate Walk, with fall-themed treats handed out at official stops among downtown Valpo restaurants and retailers from noon to 4:30 p.m. Half an hour after it wraps, Valparaiso American Legion Post #94 opens Brewski Fest on Central Park Plaza. It runs from 5 to 10 p.m. with food trucks, live music and beer, and the proceeds benefit the Post.

The gap between the two events is short, and both summer arrivals are open through it. Pat's opens at 2 p.m., partway through the Promenade, and stays open until 9. Alpen Haus is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. that day, an hour past the end of Brewski Fest. On a day that runs from noon until 10 p.m., there is no stretch downtown with nothing open.

October 23 starts on Alpen Haus's opening bell

Downtown Trick-or-Treat runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, October 23, with more than 100 local business and organization stops. Alpen Haus opens its doors at 4 p.m. on weekdays, the same minute the event begins. Pat's has been open since 2. When the candy route ends at 6, both still have hours to go: three more at Pat's and four at Alpen Haus.

November and December move indoors

After Halloween, the calendar shifts toward the Memorial Opera House at 104 Indiana Avenue. It hosts a USO Show with the Calumet Ridge Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, November 7. It then runs The Secret Garden on selected dates from Friday, November 27 through Sunday, December 13. On Thursday, December 3, Chicago Street Theatre at 154 West Chicago Street hosts Classical Blast: Dark Side of the Yule from 7 to 9 p.m. The theater says on the event listing that the band's popularity meant booking it on a Thursday this year. Outdoors, Pink Friday falls on November 20, with hours set by each participating business. Holly Days closes out the year on Saturday, December 5, from 3 to 6 p.m. It brings entertainment, ice sculptures, lights, carolers, Santa and open houses at downtown shops.

Holly Days is a three-hour event on a day when Pat's is open for seven hours and Alpen Haus for twelve. A December evening of ice sculptures followed by a plate of rouladen is now possible on Washington Street, a few blocks from where the carolers stand.

Monday through Wednesday is the quiet part of the week

The same schedules that line up so well on weekends leave a gap early in the week. Pat's is closed Monday through Wednesday. Alpen Haus is closed Mondays. None of the major downtown dates listed for the rest of 2026 lands on those days either. That leaves Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at Alpen Haus as the only weekday option among these two newcomers, from 4 to 10 p.m.

Another dessert counter may arrive on the block before winter ends. The Times of Northwest Indiana has reported that Rita's Italian Ice & Custard plans to open on the first floor of The Linc at 215 Lincolnway, across from Pat's. The paper described a menu of more than 95 water ice flavors, plus custard, milkshakes and concretes. No opening date has been announced as of mid-October. Its hours, once posted, will show whether it joins the Thursday-to-Sunday pattern or fills the early-week gap.
